Seldom does a book get my attention as deeply as Lisa  Gardner’s work “Fear Nothing” had managed to do. Absolutely chilling, and superbly written, Mrs. Gardener used a very unique approach to tell this tale, by switching between third and first person, giving us a unique insight into the thought process of a seemingly straightforward, yet interestingly complicated, main character named Dr. Adeine Glen.

From the outside, Dr. Glen is a very sophisticated, highly functioning adult with a rare genetic infliction – she can not feel pain. Yet she manages her day to day life well, even if, added to her already disabling disease, she has not one, but two serial killers in her family.

When another serial killer surfaces, she works together with Boston Detective D.D. Waren to catch this madman.

The twists and turns of this book left me breathless and rooting for people I thought at first as evil, every page a surprise. Even though this book is a part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone book, as I have done. But be warned, once you read one book by Lisa Gardner, you will want to come back for more.

(Disclaimer: This book was NOT given to me by a publisher, as some of my other books are, in return for an honest review. )

A Lonely, Silent Night

A Lonely, Silent Night - A Flash Fiction

With desperation in her heart, she summoned him without hesitation.
The darkness of the last few weeks had been so overwhelming, that the warnings of the old woman had not found its way into her thoughts, never even considering that who she was calling for, was not the same person he had once been.
It did not matter, anyway. Her life did no longer matter to her, a life without him, more terrifying than any potential entity finding its way into her space.
One more moment, one more glance into his beautiful blue eyes, is all she asked for, and exactly what she received, as he took her life, as quickly as she had taken his before.

Progress – A Five Sentence Flash Fiction

Progress

“Is this a suitable warm environment for the youngest?”
Checking the thermometer, he nodded approvingly, answering swiftly: “You have done our cause well.”
“It is my pleasure to serve, the New Order, Sir.”
Looking behind them, the grey floor littered with bodies of those who rose against them earlier, in an ill-timed attempt to hinder progress, he allowed a rare smile to graze his lips.
“I am beginning to think, that we might still be able to get the point across, that change is inevitable, for all of us – with or without them alive.”

The Cop – A Flash Fiction Story

Grieving families. My personal nightmare.
And I am a part of their nightmare.
I have to poke into their lives, dig deeper then anyone would like me to.
Really, I do care.
Still, I have to do my job.

It is not my fault, that I uncover mistresses and secret bank accounts.
I am aware of the dilemma an no longer hidden drug problem will be for the family and with your friends.
Yes, I am sorry to hear, that the man in the bag, being driven away,  is someones father. Someones friend.
It touches my soul deeper then I will ever share with anyone, and definitely not with you
.
Even my wife, and absolutely not with my children.
Keeping a brave face for their sake.
And for yours.

Never-less, the scars this and every death leave upon my soul, are deep.
They wake me from each sleep, never restful, always disturbed.
Nightmares of tangled bodies, and the ability of human disdain of one another.
How can people be so cruel?

Yet, between the wanting to drown your and my sorrows in the bottom of a whiskey bottle, I return.
I always return.
Because someone has to.
Someone has to clean up, make sure that at least some of those scumbags will be locked up, away from you.

So I return.
Again.
Tonight.
My badge and gun always in reach.

But the question remains.
How can I survive another death?
